Joe Joyce (14-0) ended a year long absence from the ring on Saturday night, defeating Christian Hammer (27-10) in the fourth round.

Joyce started off like someone who had been out of the ring for a year. He was being beaten to the punch in the first round of the contest. The tough German was winging in clubbing right hands early on, but the shots did not seem to faze the “Juggernaut”.

Joyce then started to target the body of Hammer in the second round but would still leave himself open to being caught. Although the shots from Hammer were landing again in the second, Joyce did not stop coming.

The third round was the first time Hammer showed any sign of slowing down, he looked physically exhausted. This was where Joyce capitalised and finally got his breakthrough!

Joyce landed a beautifully timed left hook over the top of Hammer’s high guard at the end of the round. Despite the protest that it was behind the head the referee deemed the knockdown legal.

Hammer was saved by the bell.

Twenty seconds into round four, Hammer was dropped again after being stalked down by Joyce. A right hand to the body had him physically distressed. Hammer beat the count but was knocked down again shortly after. Victor Loughlin eventually waved off the contest after Hammer was dropped for the fourth time by yet another body shot!

It was confirmed after the fight the ‘Juggernaut’ will return September 24 most likely in London for a BIG heavyweight fight!

Jason Cunningham vs Zolani Tete

Jason Cunningham (31-7) faced a former two-time world champion in Zolani Tete (30-4) in the co-main event of the evening. The ‘Iceman’ took a gamble fighting at world level…

The gamble proved to be too much for the man from Doncaster.

Zolani Tete brutally knocked out Jason Cunningham in the fourth round, winning the IBF International, WBO international, and Commonwealth Super-Bantamweight titles. The former two division world champion proved he still has a lot to offer at world level!

The first three rounds where all controlled by Tete. He used his southpaw jab to frustrate the ‘Iceman’. Cunningham did not manage to land anything of significance to trouble his opponent.

Eventually, Tete seized his opportunity and landed a lovely left-hand flush on Cunningham’s chin, dropping him to the canvas. Cunningham beat the count there was a lot of time left in the round…

As the referee waived for the action to continue, Tete went straight for the finish landing a barrage of punches inflicting further damage onto Cunningham. The final blow was a powerful left hand to the side of Cunningham’s head sending him unconscious.

It has been confirmed that Cunningham has been given the all clear by the hospital and we wish him all the best. Even after the most successful run of his career, there are some great fights still to be made at Super-Bantamweight for Cunningham. Liam Davies for the British Title could be a great fight in the future!

The Undercard

Marc Chamberlain turned 11-0 after defeating Marc Vidal (13-3-5) via unanimous decision to win the vacant IBF European Lightweight Title. The scorecards read 100-90 on all the judges’ scorecards. Despite winning the fight comfortably, it was an entertaining bout with both fighters having success. Chamberlain will now look to push onwards in his career, eyeing the domestic fighters who are above him in the rankings.

Tommy Fletcher dispatched of Aron Vrnoga (1-1) on his professional debut in the first minute, of the first round. The exciting 6’7 cruiserweight, who fights out of Mark Tibbs’ gym, is a very exciting prospect with a big career ahead of him. Looking forward to seeing him out as soon as possible!

Micky Burke Jr moved to 7-0 after a unanimous decision win against the awkward Serge Ambomo (7-32-3). Referee Victor Loughlin scored the bout 60-55. The fight was closely contested throughout, some of the fans thought this was a very wide scorecard.

Henry Turner moved to 8-0 after defeating Jakub Laskowski (4-17-1) 60-54. A very talented prospect who is definitely one to watch on the Queensberry stable.
