Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall 2 – The Scorecards Strike Back

  • May 29, 2024
  • 2 min read

The rematch between Josh Taylor and Catterall delivered. It was a closely fought contest between two of the World’s best Super-Lightweights. In the early rounds, Catterall was landing the better work, hurting Taylor to the head and body. What I found particularly impressive was Catterall’s defensive work, how he changes the angles to ensure Taylor had little to no target to aim at. If you had to pick who would secure the stoppage, it would have been Catterall.

However, I though Taylor boxed brilliantly. His determination to win pulled him through the rounds Catterall had success in. Taylor naturally being more aggressive meant he had to play into Catterall’s gameplan. He still had success, landing a lot of good work in the mid-to-late rounds. For me, whoever won the last round won the fight…

Unfortunately, the scorecards did not reflect how close this fight was. The two 117-111 scorecards are incredibly disrespectful to Taylor. You could argue the rounds that Taylor won were close and the rounds that Catterall won were more decisive but 117-111 is just ridiculous.

The scorecards should not overshadow how much of a brilliant fight this was. The rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall secures Fight of the Night.

Chev Clarke picked up the British Cruiserweight title and Performance of the Night after stopping Ellis Zorro in the eighth round. It wasn’t easy by any means, Clarke had to deal with a very awkward Ellis Zorro throughout who opted to spoil the fight and hold, not letting Clarke let anywhere near him… and it was working.

Chev remained on the front foot, maintaining the pressure, and not becoming frustrated with Zorro’s holding. C4 detonated two right hands sending Zorro to the canvas… AND THE NEW.

Prospect of the Night was the Billericay Bomber, George Liddard. One of the most active prospects in Britain, Liddard secured the first round KO victory with a beautiful right hook against the more experienced Graham McCormack! After three successive points victories, the stoppage victory will give the 7-0 Middleweight prospect huge amounts of confidence.

With his next fight already scheduled, Liddard has given himself some real momentum heading into another step up against the undefeated SA Smith. All eyes on the Brentwood Centre on June 29.

Paddy Donovan secured the stoppage victory against the experience fan favourite Lewis Ritson. It was a fairly one paced affair throughout, with Donovan remaining dominant. It wasn’t until the eighth round where Donovan went through the gears and hurt Ritson. Donovan got the job done in round 9 but maybe could have done the job earlier with the talent shown in those last two rounds.

Gary Cully showed his class in a close fight with former European Champion Francesco Patera. Cully boxed well and was the deserved winner in this step up but one of the scorecards was incredibly disrespectful to Patera… 98-92?!

Giorgio Visioli continued to make his mark in the professional ranks securing his third KO win in three fights. Incredibly bright future ahead!

Leli Buttigieg impressed again in the second sixth rounder of his career. Leli secured another dominant points victory moving to 4-0.
